The drawings are often made with a swift stroke, seemingly seeking the essence of a previous sketch. The incomplete paintings, in turn, reveal the compositional stages, while highlighting certain elements over others in areas where the canvas remains untouched. In both cases, these works seem to demand a contemporary reading, and in this sense, they reveal a very significant relevance.

Captivated by this rich universe and encouraged by the 150th anniversary of the artist’s death, I decided to compose a chamber work dedicated specifically to the members of the Trio Fortuny, with whom I had already had the opportunity to collaborate—and thus, I could attest to their interpretations full of musicality, commitment, and craftsmanship.

The trio is structured in three movements, each of them related to a visual work by the painter from Reus.

The 1st movement is based on The Painter’s Children in the Japanese Salon and practices obsessive—almost childlike—insistence on a main motif, which ends up developing through various scenarios, often interrupted, fragmented, or diluted.

The 2nd movement, summery in character, evokes the painter’s stay in Portici, a small town in Southern Italy that marked a departure from the usual themes of his earlier work, fostering a creative effervescence, blue and luminous.

The 3rd movement, inspired by the sketches and textures of The Spanish Wedding, suggests the appearance of a fandango, a dance that, during the brief life of the Catalan artist, already implied music from a previous time, associated with the characters in his works, from that «painting of housecoats,» seemingly accompanied by the chords of Luigi Boccherini.

[/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_divider _builder_version=»4.18.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}» theme_builder_area=»post_content»][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_audio audio=»https://www.josepmariaguix.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/09-Guix-Esbos.mp3″ title=»Esbós (2021) » artist_name=»for Violin & Piano – 4 min.» admin_label=»Audio» _builder_version=»4.18.0″ background_layout=»dark» use_border_color=»off» border_color=»#ffffff» border_style=»solid» global_colors_info=»{}» theme_builder_area=»post_content»][/et_pb_audio][et_pb_toggle admin_label=»Conmutador» _builder_version=»4.18.0″ background_size=»initial» background_position=»top_left» background_repeat=»repeat» use_border_color=»off» border_color=»#ffffff» border_style=»solid» global_colors_info=»{}» theme_builder_area=»post_content»]

https://www.universaledition.com/josep-maria-guix-8296/works/esbos-34065

Program note:

This brief composition, Sketch (upon and ancient glossa), establishes parallelisms with the typical harmonic links found in the Spanish folia -although it is based on personal thematic material- and, especially, with the concept of ostinato and progressive transformation that characterise a chaconne.

Nevertheless, it stays away from the traditional structure of theme with variations to build a concentrated mix, in which various fragments are juxtaposed and possible developments are insinuated. Of necessity it must be brief, as it conveys truth concentrated to the highest degree. The poems by Issa Kobayashi (1763-1828) written above, are the starting point for this music, similarly brief, refined and evocative.

A linking device gives unity to the whole: the mist. A mist whose presence in the composition blurs melodic contours, diffuses harmonies, modulates colours, crushes the rhythm. The sound emerges from out of the mist and the mist submerges itself within the sound, and within our thoughts.

In the work, each poem alludes to one movement. The peaceful introduction evokes nocturne and is charged with spirituality: time stands still. The bell awakens random reminiscences, rewinds lived-through moments.
